This Or That: The Differences Between "Nut" Carrier Oils
The truth is, the only real nut oil out of all the carrier oils we offer is Hazelnut. However, Coconut, Macadamia and Sweet Almond are commonly associated with nuts, especially in culinary use and when it comes to nut allergies.
Though these carriers may not all be derived from “true nuts,” botanically speaking, they have similarities that can make it difficult when choosing between the four. This caused us to want to give you, our readers, the deets on what makes each of these carriers stand out in a crowd.
Coconut
Fractionated Coconut oil is the product of separating long-chain triglycerides (LCTs) and medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) into fractions through heating. Lauric acid, a naturally occurring component in Coconut oil, is also removed as it contributes to the thickness of Coconut oil, resulting in completely liquid oil.
In Fractionated Coconut oil, beneficial MCTs remain, including caprylic and capric acids which are antioxidants and also help the skin to retain moisture. Coconut oil is also known to have a light, easily absorbed consistency that leaves skin feeling well moisturized and nourished.
This carrier oil is odorless and does not spoil, thus offering a gamut of applications and uses.
Hazelnut
Hazelnut carrier oil, like most carrier oils, are produced by cold pressing. This means that the nut and shell are passed through a machine that cracks the shell and mashes the nut. Water runs over the hazelnuts, and the mixture gets passed through a sieve, then a centrifuge which separates the oil and water. The Hazelnut carrier oil is then collected.
High in oleic acid, along with vitamins A, B and E, Hazelnut has a dry consistency, meaning it absorbs well and doesn’t leave the skin feeling oily. Hazelnut oil is versatile and compatible with oily, dry and sensitive skin. Its mildness, paired with its astringent and moisturizing abilities makes this oil a go-to for all skin types.
Hazelnut carrier oil is often used in powerful skincare products and regimens.
Macadamia
Macadamias are often regarded as an expensive gift or indulgence, and the carrier oil holds the same respect for its multifaceted abilities. Like Hazelnut, Macadamia is cold pressed to ensure the extent of the oil’s benefits remain intact.
Filled with palmitic and oleic acids, Macadamia carrier oil helps reduce the appearance of aging while promoting skin cell regeneration. Macadamia oil also acts as a gentle occlusive, maintaining the skin’s barrier and preventing trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL). What’s more, this carrier oil makes a good companion and guardian against changing or harsh weather conditions.
Sweet Almond
One of the most popular carrier oils on the market, Sweet Almond is suitable for all skin types, but particularly dry skin. This carrier oil is slow absorbing, emollient-rich and highly moisturizing. High in antioxidants and Vitamin E, Sweet Almond can be used in mature skin serums, for damaged skin and for healing issues such as eczema and psoriasis.
Some have been confused by its mild, nutty aroma, assuming Sweet Almond carrier oil has an almond extract-y character. On the contrary, this carrier oil is valued for its non-overpowering aroma, finding itself uses in oil-based perfumes and aromatherapy massages. With its luxurious consistency and variety of uses, it’s easy to understand the palatability of this well-loved carrier.
Note: Most people allergic to tree nuts are immune to Coconuts, Macadamias and Sweet Almond, but it is recommended that you check with your doctor before using any of these oils. Also, please note that all of our oils are hand poured and bottled in the same facility.
