This or That: Cypress vs. Blue Cypress
How different can two oils be that share the same name? Is the only thing that differentiates these two oils their color? Such are the questions with Cypress and Blue Cypress.
If these two oils were people they would most likely be cousins, in that they have many of the same inward qualities but differing features. Let’s examine their relationships.
Blue Cypress
Origin: Australia
Properties:
- Analgesic
- Anti-inflammatory
- Anti-viral
- Wards off insects
- Reduces soreness
Aroma: Blue Cypress is very woody with a significant medicinal note and an overall Sandalwood-like quality. It is deep, rich and slightly minty like a respiratory salve. One observer notes that it has somewhat of a pineapple-fruitiness, and EG agrees.
Cypress
Origin: Crete
Properties:
- Antiseptic
- Reduces overactive sweat glands
- Circulation
- Varicose veins
- Respiratory
Aroma: Cypress is clean, terpenic, grassy and reminiscent of walking through a forest. It brings to mind a sterile environment. Herbaceous, with an underlying spicy note, Cypress certainly makes a nice addition to resinous oils.
Bottom Line
Though they are both from the same family, Cupressaceae, Blue Cypress and Cypress each have varying constituents, therapeutic properties and aromas based on where they are grown and their make-up.

Hi Suzi! Cypress is not a suitable substitute for Blue Cypress in most cases. We may be able to offer you some alternative suggestions if you let us know what the intended purpose of the oil is 😊

Hi :) I am doing some research to use essential oils with scrubs and one of the ingredients is a few drops of blue cypress essential oil. However I cannot find any local but, found some cypress essential oil. I was wondering if I can use the cypress essential oil?

Hi KC! Of these two oils, we would suggest Cypress though we offer quite a few oils that are more sedative and calming such as Lavender, Clary Sage, Coriander Seed, Ylang Ylang, Roman Chamomile, etc. Cypress can be used effectively for body aches and cramping.
