AAA: Are there EOs With Similar Benefits To CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is popping up everywhere, from the latest health blogs to coffee shops and bars. People who may not have had any previous interest in the world of Cannabis are now being turned on to the non-psychotropic wonder-constituent of the plant, Cannabis sativa.

With new research and studies being released almost daily about the uses and effects of CBD oil on a gamut of issues, from everyday inconveniences to chronic health problems, this growing fad has caused many EG fans to ask: are there essential oils with similar benefits to CBD?  We looked at some of the top uses for CBD oil, according to Harvard Health, and compared research on the efficacy of CBD versus essential oils in these areas. It’s important to note that the differentiation between CBD and EOs is a bit like comparing apples to oranges, in that essential oils contain various constituents, whereas CBD is just one constituent. With that said, here’s what we discovered.

Stress

Anxiety is currently one of the most prevalent mental disorders people face in the US today. Scientists and doctors are on a hunt to find natural and effective solutions to the issues that people with anxiety so often face. Promising studies and evidence show that CBD shows strong anxiolytic properties, and is thus often used for such purposes, but how do essential oils compare? Much like CBD, a variety of essential oils have proven their stress relieving benefits, such as Bergamot, Sweet Orange, Neroli and Lavender. This is mainly attributed to these oils’ limonene and linalool content. Oils that encourage stress relief are best inhaled, and can be kept in a personal pocket inhaler for when triggers strike.

Sleep

A lack of sleep can contribute to a variety of health issues, such as a weakened immune system, diabetes, obesity and even cardiovascular diseases. The importance of a good night’s sleep is thus crucial to good health, but what if you simply can’t  sleep? Surprisingly, though many outlets report CBD as having sedative properties, numerous studies have shown otherwise. Other studies have reported mixed reviews on whether CBD is an effective sedative or not, and have concluded that further studies need to be done before a decision can be made in this area. Comparatively, research shows that certain essential oils are a good option for encouraging sleep and relaxation. Lavender is one oil most often touted for improving one's quality of sleep due to its major constituent linalool. Other essential oils high in linalool include Coriander Seed, Magnolia and Basil. These oils are best used for sleep through inhalation and can be diffused in the room before bedtime.

Pain & Inflammation

Another common ailment that people face and that can drastically affect one’s quality of life is pain and inflammation. Studies, most often associated with inflammation, have shown that CBD has effective applications in this area. Essential oils are also associated with the ability to alleviate discomforts, and include Bergamot, Black Pepper, Cardamom, Clove Bud, Frankincense, Peppermint and Sweet Orange. These oils are best applied to the area of concern, and diluted to an appropriate amount.

In conclusion

CBD does exhibit many promising therapeutic benefits, even despite the fact that this lone constituent was outnumbered by the myriad of essential oils (containing tens to hundreds of constituents) which were mentioned in this article. With that said, numerous essential oils share similar benefits with CBD, and we find that both can be used effectively and interchangeably. However, much like with EOs, you will need to ensure you’re buying CBD from a trusted supplier and we recommend checking with a healthcare professional prior to using these products. Lastly, before purchasing CBD, you may want to check your stock of essential oils as you’ll likely find that the EOs you already own have the benefits you’re seeking in CBD oil.
